Police are searching for a gunman after a woman was shot while sitting in a car in Canberra's inner south this morning.

ACT Policing said about 8:10am the woman had parked her car on Dominion Circuit in Forrest when a man got out of another car and shot at her vehicle.

Officers said the woman then drove herself to the nearby Manuka Oval and asked security guards for help.

Emergency services were called and she was taken to hospital, suffering gunshot and shrapnel wounds.

Superintendent Stephen Turnbull said an operation was underway to find the alleged gunman who fled the scene.

He is described as Caucasian and believed to be driving with a Caucasian passenger in a silver two-door hatchback with New South Wales registration on the front and no licence plates on the back.
