Dashcam footage showed the attacker punching the delivery driver in Camillo, south-eastern Perth at just after 5pm on Sunday.

The 17-year-old then allegedly fled to a nearby park with the stolen phone but was tackled to the ground by the former officer who rushed to help.

'I yelled out "get down on the ground" and he got down. I tackled him down further, rolled him over onto his chest and held him in position,' the ex-officer told 9News.

But despite being pinned down, the man then escaped again and residents said he ran onto the roof of a kindergarten in an attempt to evade police.

The 17-year-old was finally arrested a short time later and charged with trespass and aggravated robbery.

CCTV footage also showed the boy running through the yard of a home in nearby Dyson Court moments before he allegedly ran into the path of the delivery driver on Westfield Road.

The Uber Eats driver Nibu Anthony was left with cuts and swelling to his face and required stitches after being taken to Armadale Hospital for treatment.

Mr Anthony said he would not be going back to his job once he had recovered.

'Always keep the doors and windows closed when driving. I say that now after my experience,' he said.


Brothers plead guilty to offences after campsite shooting .
