Trent Jason Miller was charged with aggravated attempting to intentionally cause serious harm and aggravated causing harm after the incident in June at Lyell McEwin Hospital.

A 37-year-old female nurse was on a break when she was allegedly approached by Miller, who asked for a cigarette.

She was then attacked with an unidentified sharp object, leaving her with a throat wound and in need of emergency specialist surgery.

Miller was arrested the following day at Murray Bridge - more than 60 kilometres from the hospital.

Facing the Adelaide Magistrates Court by video link from James Nash House secure mental health facility, Miller on Tuesday applied for an order that would prevent him from being transferred to a prison.

Magistrate Jayanthi McGrath agreed, stipulating he must be kept at James Nash House or a similar facility.

Miller, who is yet to enter pleas, was remanded to reappear before the court in January.
