Colin and Di Holmes came close to losing everything as a bushfire rapidly approached the New South Wales mid-north-coast town of Bobin on Friday evening.

The blaze travelled so quickly, the couple simply did not have time to leave.

"Oh, it was terrible … It was like a train coming, that's what it sounds like. It was so noisy," Ms Holmes said.

As flames sped through surrounding cars, the couple knew they only had one choice — to fight the blaze off.

Other nearby residents, whose homes were too large to defend, sheltered in the couple's home.

"They didn't want anything to eat, they were just in shock and couldn't believe what had happened."

Across the road, the historic local primary school, which dates back to 1883, wasn't as lucky.

All that remains is smouldering twisted metal where the school's halls used to stand.

For many, the devastation of the fires is too raw to process.

SES worker Rosina Nicholas was at home when the fire approached but moved to the local evacuation hall.

While the fire front still burns in the distance, many of the town's residents are eager to return home to assess the damage and begin the confronting task of cleaning up.

But it could be several days before all residents are allowed to return to the small town.

Farmer Peter Heagney was able to protect his home but lost a shed and valuable hectares of farmland.

Already gripped by drought, all that remains of his hay farm is ashes.

"I couldn't describe how quick it was … the helicopter meant to be dropping water just gave up and started blasting his sirens, basically saying 'get out'," he said.

"You feel sorry for the ones that lost their house."

At least 150 homes have been destroyed or damaged in fires that have swept across the New South Wales north coast, the Rural Fire Service said.

That number may rise in coming days as Building Impact Assessment teams assess more damaged areas.

Authorities said three people have been confirmed dead and there are still fears for five people unaccounted for.
