An off-duty ranger who was mauled by a crocodile in a remote part of Queensland fought off the beast and drove more than an hour home to call an ambulance.

The man, in his 50s, was attacked in the Shelburne area near the tip of Cape York Peninsula while fishing about 5pm yesterday.

The reptile bit his leg before taking hold of his hand, but he was able to fight it off by poking it in the eye.

Despite serious injuries, the man then drove himself more than an hour back to his home to call the ambulance.
