"Analysis by Risk Frontiers of major historical bushfires shows distance from the bushland fringe to be the single most important factor determining the probability of building destruction given an extreme fire in adjacent bushlands," the group's general manager Andrew Gissing said.

More than 100,000 homes in the Sydney basin alone are within 100 metres of bushland, placing them at risk of destruction based on previous bushfire activity.

Data from the consultancy Risk Frontiers identified premises exposed to extensive bush. Of the total, more than 31,500 homes on Sydney's north shore were in "at-risk" areas - from Belrose to Berowra, and south to Lane Cove - while Turramurra had the most homes nestled near bush with some 4500 residences.

Fire trails must be maintained 'every day of the year'

Fire trails must be maintained 'every day of the year' Midcoast Council Mayor David West says "fire trails must be maintained 365 days a year" as bushfires continue to ravage the nation. According to the New South Wales Rural Fire Service, a fire trail is way to manage, prevent, fight and contain bushfires. There are roughly 75,000 kilometres of fire trails in in the state, the service says. "Give the power to local government to investigate these fire trails," Mr West told Sky News hosts Alan Jones and Graham Richardson. "Give them the funds to do it," he said.

New South Wales has declared a week-long state of emergency as the state braces for what the premier, Gladys Berejiklian, has described as “some of the most devastating bushfires we have ever seen”.

"Analysis by Risk Frontiers of major historical bushfires shows distance from the bushland fringe to be the single most important factor determining the probability of building destruction given an extreme fire in adjacent bushlands," the group's general manager Andrew Gissing said.

"The vast majority of homes that are destroyed in fires are within 500 metres of bushland," he said, noting that in the 2018 Tathra bushfire some 73 per cent of properties destroyed were within 100 metres and no home was razed further than 630 metres.

The estimates come as Sydney faces its first day of "catastrophic" fire danger since authorities adopted new ratings nationally in 2009. Hot, dry and windy conditions are only likely to be relieved by the evening when a blustery cool change moves up the coast - potentially aggravating fire dangers.

More than 130 bushfires continue to burn, with three people dead and 150 properties destroyed, and conditions set to worsen. The greater Sydney region will face catastrophic fire danger on Tuesday for the first time since the Authorities warn lives at risk as horror fire day predicted for NSW on Tuesday.

Mr Gissing said the risk of bushfires was expected to grow in the future with more frequent fire weather conditions, longer bushfire seasons and increased populations in at-risk areas. A shifting window for hazard-reduction burning as well as increased resource fatigue could stretch fire-suppression resources further.

"It's certainly not about sterilising the bushland interface," he added. "People want to live there," but they must be aware of the risks and plan for them.

The analysis showed Springwood in the Blue Mountains also had 6500 houses located within risky distances of bush, while in the postcodes around Gosford on the Central Coast some 14,275 homes were in similarly high-risk areas.

Other high-risk postcodes in Sydney include Engadine, Menai, and Hornsby.

Blue Mountains mayor Mark Greenhill said the council already had "the most restrictive" rules in NSW in terms of where buildings can go, including their siting on individual blocks.

Anger over fireworks on Sydney Harbour amid total fire ban, devastating bushfires

Anger over fireworks on Sydney Harbour amid total fire ban, devastating bushfires A fireworks display over Sydney harbour was granted an exemption from the total fire ban imposed to try to protect the state from devastating bushfires by the Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue, the organiser said. The eight-minute display last night, believed to be for a corporate function, sparked outrage online that incendiary devices were exploding over Sydney while other parts of the state were battling extreme fire conditions.Social media users in Sydney blasted organisers for going ahead with the display, which began at 9.45pm.

However, the local government had to deal with generations of homes built after World War II to a lower building fire safety code than is now enforced for new construction, he said. Retrofitting was costly and couldn't be imposed.

Ku-ring-gai Council, which has more than 10,000 homes in potentially risky areas, said it had been preparing with major hazard-reduction burning of more than 25.5 hectares of bush at Twin Creeks Reserve in Turramurra last week.

Ku-ring-gai mayor Jennifer Anderson said bushfire protection was a shared responsibility between the council, emergency services and the community.

“Having a plan of what to do in a bushfire is essential protection for you and your family," she said.

Ku-ring-gai lost homes in the January 1994 bushfires when 13 houses were destroyed around Lane Cove National Park in Lindfield. There were also several houses lost in Killara and areas around Ku-ring-gai Chase National park.

Hazelwood Power Corporation found guilty of putting workers and community at risk during 2014 mine fire .
The operator of the Hazelwood Power Station has been found guilty of 10 of 12 charges of putting its workforce and nearby communities at risk in relation to the 2014 mine fire. The fire started on February 9 when two nearby bushfires spread into the open-cut coal mine and burnt for 45 days, blanketing the region in thick smoke and coal dust.A Supreme Court jury found the company did not adequately assess the risk of fire, did not have an adequate reticulated water system, failed to slash vegetation around the mine and did not take action early enough to wet down areas around the mine.
