Less than 30 years after Queensland decriminalised homosexuality, the state has opened its first LGBTI aged care home.

The facility at Parkwood on the Gold Coast has been issued with 90 residential aged care places under a Federal Government program aimed at prioritising services for special needs groups, including the LGBTI community.

CEO of the Queensland AIDS Council Rebecca Reynolds welcomed the move, saying gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and intersex people faced unique challenges as they got older.

"For folks who have been impacted by years of discrimination — legal discrimination, health system discrimination — they need that extra incentive to step out and say 'this is my relationship and this is my body' and know that it will be welcomed," she said.

"If we look at our intersex, gender-diverse populations, they have particular health needs.

"And for older women within lesbian relationships there is a lot of poverty, which is an impact of the wage gap."

Nicholas Tyson, who is on provider Arcare's advisory committee, said that while the facility was open to the wider community, it would provide specialised care for LGBTI people who might experience stigma elsewhere.

"Especially for the trans community, when you can have chronic conditions and acute issues — where can we go where we feel safe," he asked.

Landowner Trudi Murray said she was inspired to establish the facility on the Gold Coast after seeing the plight of an elderly gay relative.

"He is now 86 years old and he has a carer come into his unit," she said.

"He refuses to go into an aged care facility because he is concerned about not being accepted [so] I wanted to create a place where he would be welcomed.

"This will be allow people to be themselves, with no fear of criticism.

"It will be a culture of acceptance; you don't want to be ending your days in a hidden environment."
