The mother of a Melbourne primary school girl who was struck by a falling tree branch says she got the "fright of her life".

Tanya Rosenquist was at work when she received a call from the principal at St John Vianney's primary school in Parkdale on Tuesday, informing her that a branch had fallen on her daughter, Maddie, and two of her classmates.

"The adrenaline just ran through me, [it was] biggest fright of my life," Ms Rosenquist said.

The three girls were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital by ambulance. One remains there in a serious condition.

Maddie remembers hearing someone yell out for her to move, but can't remember hearing any crack before the stray limb broke away from the trunk.

She suffered minor injuries to her head, shoulder and back.

Maddie had this message for her friend who is still in hospital: "Hi, I love you."

The incident comes several months after Angie Suryadi died when a tree crushed her family's car in the Yarra Ranges.

Only days later, University of Melbourne professor Allison Milner was killed by a falling tree in Princes Park, north of the Melbourne CBD.
