It read: 'I am aware how scary this message is going to be. We have Theo'.

'Please inform his father that he is OK. He is not in Byron. We had to move him and lay low due to all the looking around.

'He is OK for now if his father follows what we want to the letter.

Mr Pector revealed the messages to The Australian's podcast on the mystery, The Lighthouse.

'The first time I received that it was a shock,' he said. 'You start wondering "Is it true, is it not true?" '

He said he immediately told the police, who instructed him to not message back.

Detectives found the messages appeared to be coming from South Africa but the man may have been using a VPN to change his computer's location, he said.

Mr Pector said the man's Facebook account was bare with no information or pictures, making him very hard to trace.

Similar messages were also sent to other members of Theo's family and his long-term Belgian girlfriend back home, he told The Lighthouse.

A New South Wales Police spokesman declined to comment, telling Daily Mail Australia: 'As this is now under coronial jurisdiction, it would be inappropriate for the NSW Police to comment further.'

On Thursday it emerged a large bloody stick was found near a Byron beach just weeks after Theo disappeared.

The mysterious 1.5m stick had the words 'The Judge' written on its edge when it was found in the sand dunes at Clarkes Beach.
