A grandfather who was hit and killed after stopping in the emergency lane of a busy Melbourne freeway with his three-year-old grandson in the car may have been trying to retrieve a lost hat, police say.

Armando 'Andrew' Dalmazio stopped his white Alfo-Romeo convertible in the emergency lane of the Princes Freeway, near Princes Highway in Werribee just after 4.30pm yesterday.
