As two men stand accused of what’s been touted as one of the worst cases of public corruption in the country with sums up to $25 million mentioned, horseracing – the so-called sport of kings – is emerging as the arena where the two men charged spent large sums of money.

Paul Whyte, 56, a senior West Australian public servant who was once in charge of the integrity and audit function of the Department of Communities, has been charged over a $2.5 million rort using a false invoicing scheme.

Prosecutors alleged in court on Friday there was evidence to suggest the rort allegedly orchestrated by Mr Whyte could have dated back as far as 2008 and seen a further $20-25 million fleeced from the public purse, on top of the $2.5 million already alleged.

In 2008 Mr Whyte, Mr Anthonisz and Mr Dale co-owned a racehorse called Hysteria.

Mr Whyte and Mr Dale were also listed as parties to the sale of racehorse Darlington Abbey for $50,000 in February 2011.

Mr Whyte’s prized horse Volkoff was named after his wrestling hero, croatian-born Nikolai Volkoff, and has won $500,000 in prize money.

Ms Jewel was not aware of his arrest until contacted on Friday.

"I am totally shocked", she said, and added the two had divorced seven years ago.

"The only thing I have to do with Jake is the drop off and pick up of our daughter and shared custody," she said.

"I have nothing to do with his life other than our daughter."

Mr Anthonisz is the father of Ms Jewel’s nine-year-old daughter, with whom he lives full time.

“This is a punch in the guts.”
