Former war journalist Michael Ware says Academic Timothy Weeks and his American colleague were released in the heart of the Taliban's stronghold.

“They were released in the Taliban badlands and were certainly held for all these years in God knows what conditions in Pakistan,” Mr Ware told Sky News on Wednesday.

The pair are now being cared for by US Special Forces after the Afghan president announced last week that three insurgents would be freed as part of the arrangement.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was happy about their release and was in contact with the US Secretary of State.
