Weather, dryness holding back early burns

Weather, dryness holding back early burns Bushfire experts say it's always risky to do hazard reduction burns and conditions have to be just right, with weather more of a hindrance than activists. The early fire season and extreme dryness have had more of an impact on the amount of hazard reduction burns than complaints by environmental activists. Experts say there are many practical constraints on this kind of fire management that makes it very tricky.

The Country Fire Service has issued three emergency warnings for a bushfire burning out of control in South Australia's Lower Yorke Peninsula.

The CFS said conditions are constantly changing and the fire is burning in an easterly direction towards Sultana Point, Hungry Point and Wattle Point.

An emergency message is also current for residents in the Edithburgh township.

Catastrophic fire conditions - the highest possible level of bushfire danger - have eased across greater Sydney, Illawarra and Hunter areas thanks to a slight cool change, however dozens of bushfires are still burning. A state of emergency, as declared by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday, is still in effect, giving emergency powers to Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons and prohibiting fires across the state.
