A busload of schoolboys have been subjected to an abusive verbal tirade, with one teenager punched in the face, after a man walked onto their bus following a collision with a car in Sydney's northern suburbs.

Video has emerged showing a man walking through the bus filled with students from Shore School, who were returning to the North Sydney site from rowing training in Gladesville about 6pm on Wednesday when their bus had a minor collision with a black BMW.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said the 20-year-old male driver of the BMW boarded the bus following the collision on Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove, and allegedly attacked a 15-year-old boy.

In the video, the man can be heard aggressively shouting expletives at the teenagers before appearing to punch one boy in the face after he asked the man to stop.

The older boy is then struck after telling the man that some of the boys on the bus are only 12.

The video appears to show the bus driver outside the vehicle at the time, speaking with a young woman who is shouting at him.

The police spokeswoman said the man left the scene in his car after the alleged assault and was located a short time later in an underground car park.

His details were recorded and he was released pending further inquiries.

The boy suffered bruising and a chipped tooth, the spokeswoman said.

The headmaster of Shore School, Timothy Wright, confirmed there had been an incident involving secondary school students returning from rowing training.

"The school has been very concerned," Dr Wright said. "It has been referred to the NSW police and we have of course pastorally followed up the students involved."

He said the students involved "are well, but we are monitoring that in consultation with their families".
