A man who was hanging onto the side of a car has been thrown to his death after a crash caused the vehicle to flip near central Geelong.

Police say the 41-year-old was hanging off the side of a black Kia Sorrento driven by a 20-year-old man in Bell Park, a suburb of Geelong, when it collided with a Volkswagen at Thompson Road just after 9pm on Sunday.

The impact caused the Kia to overturn, flinging the 41-year-old passenger from the vehicle.

The driver, from Newcombe, fled the scene but was arrested shortly after.

"We're getting some conflicting reports – some people are saying he was hanging mostly outside the window and other people saying he was just hanging onto the side."

The death takes the number of fatalities on Victorian roads to 245. In the whole of 2018, 196 people died on Victoria's roads.
