The Forrestdale bushfire that prompted an emergency warning on Tuesday afternoon has been downgraded to a watch and act but firefighters are still urging residents be alert.

The fire started near the intersection of Nicholson Road and Rowley Road in Oakford and was moving out of control in a north easterly direction.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services warned there was a threat to lives and homes and residents needed to act immediately to survive.

The warning was upgraded to emergency just before 5pm but was downgraded to a watch and act before 7pm. The warning was issued for people in an area bounded by Armadale Road, Tonkin Highway, Oxley Road, Commercial Road and Weld Street in parts of Forrestdale.

A temporary evacuation centre has been established at the Armadale Arena, 4 Townley Street Armadale.

The department warned residents to leave now if the way was clear as well as close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.

Several roads were closed in the area and motorists were asked to avoid the area due to smoke.

About 90 firefighters were sent to the scene to put the blaze out. Aerial support was also called in.

Perth has sweltered through its earliest 40-plus degree December day since 1977.

The max temp hit 41.6C.

Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Neil Bennett said the heat was due to hot air being pulled down from the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne.

"A high pressure system in the Bight is directing this north east air to the west coast," he said.
