An Adelaide court has released dramatic CCTV footage of the build-up to the moment police fatally shot a gunman holed up with a hostage in a motel room during a 2017 siege.

State coroner David Whittle is investigating the circumstances that led to 24-year-old Matthew Kim Morgan being shot at the Tollgate Motel, at Glen Osmond, on October 21, 2017.

Giving evidence, Jami-Lee Morgan said her husband smashed a window with the barrel of a gun, before setting fire to various objects inside the motel room.

"He sprayed a piece of fabric with an aerosol deodorant," Ms Morgan said.

"I saw him pour perfume on it to light it."

Ms Morgan told the court she asked her husband "what he was doing" and he responded: "I don't know".

The inquest heard that the day before the shooting, Morgan and his wife were involved in an incident in which a police officer was struck with a car.
