Mr Rankin gave chase on a scooter and sped up to try and catch the thief.

However as his friends caught up to him, they noticed his scooter was lodged inside a concrete drain filled with water.

"Shining their lights inside the drain they found him unconscious, face-down drowning in the sewer, his helmet split and his head covered in lacerations. They lifted him out and started performing CPR, saving his life before an ambulance was called by locals," a statement from Mr Rankin's family said.

Shelvey's late gem leaves Man City frustrated at Newcastle Off-key City still could have snatched victory with Raheem Sterling, who had scored their opener, having a late effort well saved by outstanding home keeper Martin Dubravka. The expression on City manager Pep Guardiola's face said it all as he walked off in the knowledge that Liverpool will move 11 points clear later if they beat Brighton & Hove Albion."We found a way and today we found it again but unfortunately, at the end, we conceded a goal," Guardiola said, reflecting on how his side had 24 goal attempts and 77 percent possession but still failed to win.

To make matters worse, the 18-year-old didn't have an international licence required to ride a motorbike. This makes his travel insurance invalid.

The family has started an online fundraising page to cover the medical costs to bring him home.

"The bills are already over $30,000 for a few days in an international hospital and he may not be able to travel for weeks, so this will continue to rise," his family said.

"Once there is clearance to get him onto a plane, it's expected a Medevac flight to Sydney and transfers to Newcastle could be more than $100,000. Once home Lawson is likely to have a long journey of rehabilitation also."

Mr Rankin just finished high school and is well known among the Newcastle rugby union and league communities.
