An eight-month-old puppy named Bucket has been put down after he was allegedly shot in the back with an arrow fired from a longbow.

NSW Police were called to a property near the Queensland border on Friday morning after reports the puppy had been shot.

Police say a 59-year-old man fired three arrows at the puppy, with one of them striking the dog in the back.

Neighbours took Bucket to a nearby vet but his injuries were so bad he had to be euthanised.

The man was arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station, where he was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and recklessly beating and seriously injuring an animal.

He was granted conditional bail and will appear in the Byron Bay Local Court on January 13.
