A Sydney restaurateur couple are accused of keeping a female tourist as a slave in their home for more than three years.

Joshua and Shiela Mcaleer were charged with forcing a person into labour after allegedly making a Filipino woman work as a cleaner and carer in their Rockdale home from May 2013 to October 2016.

The pair run the Filipino restaurant and grocery chain Kapamilya, with the St George Shire Standard reporting that the woman was allegedly only able to leave their home to work long unpaid hours while supervised in their stores.

The Mcaleers allegedly told the tourist she owed them a debt after she had a medical procedure at Sutherland Hospital.

Police allege the tourist was originally hired as a nanny for three months, before the couple confiscated her passport and kept her in their home before she escaped.

The Mcaleer's charges include harbouring an unlawful non-citizen and making a false statement for health benefits.

Ms Mcaleer was additionally charged with deceiving the young woman into exploitation.

The Mcaleers face a maximum of 12 years in jail and will return to Downing Centre Local Court on February 4.
