Former Victoria Police chief commissioner Simon Overland has been sacked from a Melbourne council after two years in the job.

His dumping as chief executive of the City of Whittlesea comes as the former top policeman prepares to give evidence to the Lawyer X royal commission over the force's use of informants, including turncoat gangland lawyer Nicola Gobbo.

Mayor Emilia Lisa Sterjova officially announced the decision on this afternoon.

"At a council meeting held on Tuesday 10 December, the City of Whittlesea resolved to terminate the contract of its chief executive officer, Simon Overland, effective immediately," she said in a statement.

Acting chief executive Kelvin Spiller will continue to act in the role.

Councillor Stevan Kozmevski said the decision was "disgraceful."

"It's unacceptable. He's done nothing wrong. He's been an excellent CEO," he said.

Three weeks ago Mr Overland went on stress leave amid allegations of bullying by councillors.

"The situation has been very difficult now for two years, but with recent changes on council, I now regrettably find my own health and safety significantly affected," he said in a statement released at the time.

There were 12 months remaining on his $400,000 a year contract at the Whittlesea council. He's the council's fourth CEO in three years.

Despite numerous requests for an interview with 9News the mayor instead provided a brief statement saying that Simon Overland's contract had been terminated and council wishes him well for his future endeavours.

Victoria Police's current chief commissioner Graham Ashton has given evidence to the royal commission this week, with Mr Overland and another former chief commissioner Christine Nixon expected soon.
