The Cairns Post reports that two people have died in the crash and experts are on their way to investigate.

The light plane belongs to Cape Air Transport, an air taxi service running in the Torres Strait, according to the publication.

The aircraft is understood to be an Angel Aircraft Corporation Model 44 Angel twin-engine light plane with registration VH-IAZ.

A rescue helicopter was at the scene on Saturday along with firefighters and paramedics.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were on the scene at 11:30am on Saturday.

The Australian Safety Transport Bureau released a statement on Saturday confirming the plane crashed into terrain and they have launched an investigation.
