A desperate search is underway for a young reveller who vanished after attempting to swim across the shark-infested Brisbane River during a night out.

A woman saw the man jump into the river at the West End ferry terminal at Oarleigh Park at 9.15pm on Saturday and contacted police after losing sight of him in the water.

He was last seen swimming across the river towards St Lucia, which is a known hot spot for bull sharks.

Queensland Museum ichthyologist Jeff Johnson told the ABC there are an estimated 3,000 bull sharks in Brisbane River, and that they are more active in the summer months.

The man is of dark complexion, approximately 185cms tall, with black hair and a black beard, and was wearing a black and white t-shirt with black shorts and a backpack.

There have been no missing persons reports matching his description, and Queensland police have urged anyone with information on the man to come forward.

'Anyone who believes they know a man matching this description and who could have been in Brisbane last night is asked to check-in with that person and immediately contact police if they cannot be located,' a Queensland Police Service statement read.

'If the man who entered the river from the West End ferry terminal last night is reading this release he is also asked to immediately contact police.'
