Thieves have stolen food hampers and Christmas presents from a Sunday school store in regional Queensland, police say.

The robbers broke into the side of a Salvation Army hall in Maryborough on the Fraser Coast over the weekend.

The items stolen were due to be handed out to those in need this week in the lead up to Christmas.

Volunteers and police found items discarded near the store on Sunday.

Police are appealing for information about the the break and enter because "it is at this time of the year when items such as food and presents are used to assist families in need".

He said the Salvation Army was still accepting donations in the lead up to the holidays.
