(Fresh State) The son of Melbourne fruiterer Paul Virgona, who was gunned down while driving to work last year, says "hurtful" rumours about the reasons his father was targeted are not based on the facts.

Mr Virgona, 46, was driving to work early on a Saturday last November when his van was sprayed with bullets, killing him.

Police placed early blame for the execution of members of Melbourne's underworld but said they were still searching for a motive.

"Sadly after two months of very intense investigation we're still unable to provide Paul's family with the answers as to why this happened," Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said.
