Police say the man in his 30s was found by a passer-by, lying on the pavement of Chapel Street, near Oxford Street in South Yarra just after 5am.

The man was taken to hospital in a critical condition, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, died a short time after arriving.

"All I saw was people giving CPR, and someone lying down," witness Charles Burtram told 9News, adding that he hoped his DashCam footage might be of use.
