  A Genetic Mutation Is Responsible For Mysterious Deaths In The Amish Community, Researchers Say In a new paper this week, doctors at the Mayo Clinic say they’ve uncovered the cause of a mysterious heart condition that had suddenly killed over a dozen young, healthy members of a tight-knit Amish community. The culprit? A previously undiscovered genetic mutation that runs in families. Study author Michael Ackerman, a professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, is also director of the Clinic’s Sudden Death Genomics Laboratory. For years, the lab has investigated cases in which seemingly healthy people died with no clear cause, hoping to unearth new ways our genes can send us to an early grave.

Here are the five most mysterious cases of all time. It’s one of the many inexplicable incidents that continue to puzzle authorities and haunt the relatives left behind. Rottnest staff only realised a Perth chef had been missing for six days when they were in the middle of moving a new employee into his room.

Gary Martin Ablett, 46, had been working as a chef for the Prendiville Group's Hotel Rottnest for about four weeks when he worked the New Year's Eve shift.

Mr Ablett had been living on and off in staff accommodation, which is managed independently by the companies who lease on the island.

After he finished his shift on December 31 Mr Ablett left Rottnest Island on January 1 in the company of another staff member.

He caught the ferry to Fremantle and was due to travel home from the port.

Mr Ablett's next known movements are unclear, but a Prendiville Group spokeswoman said he did not turn up for his rostered shift on January 2.

"We attempted to contact Mr Ablett and family members to locate his whereabouts as he was due on shift that week," she said.

Nearly six days later, Rottnest Island staff were in the process of moving a new employee into Mr Ablett's two-person room when it was discovered he had not been seen since his New Year's Eve shift.

Police confirmed they only received a report about the missing 46-year-old on January 13, and they acted quickly to begin their investigation into his disappearance.

A WA police statement said Mr Ablett was known to frequent Fremantle, but often travelled for work, and it was possible he could have travelled back to the mainland without informing his colleagues or employer.

Hotel Rottnest confirmed it had been approached by police making inquiries into Mr Ablett and they had assisted with the investigation.

Mr Ablett is described as being 188 centimetres tall with fair skin, a solid build, short brown hair and blue eyes.
