A Melbourne father says he had a knife held to his throat when a gang of armed thugs smashed down his front door in a terrifying home invasion this morning.

Up to six youths stole a haul worth more than $70,000 after they stormed inside the family's home on Ramptons Rd, Eltham about 5.30am.

Ramiz Makouei, 34 told 9News he begged for the safety of his wife and two-year-old son, when the family awoke to the offenders.

"They were shouting and they started punching and kicking us … a few of them had a knife," he said.

Mr Makouei claimed he suffered minor injuries to his face, after the youths allegedly punched his eyes and lips.

The thugs then demanded the keys to his Range Rover, before they fled the scene in a getaway car and the family's 2018 Holden Commodore.

"You can't do anything, it's really frustrating," Mr Makouei said.

"[We were] stressed, panicking and scared.

"From now on it's going to really affect our family."

Five of the youths have been described as of African appearance with one described as being Middle Eastern in appearance.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Kelly Grindley confirmed police were investigating the violent home invasion.

"Police are investigating an aggravated burglary at a house in Eltham this morning," she said.

"The offenders armed themselves with branches and what is believed to be a conducted energy device and made demands for jewellery, mobile phones and car keys.

"The man suffered minor injuries during the incident however a woman and a child who were in the house at the time were not injured."

Police are searching for the stolen car and urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
