Heavy rain fall in north Queensland has caused flash flooding, as well as road and school closures, as some areas received as much as 500mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

With severe conditions expected to continue tomorrow, residents across the north of the state are bracing themselves.


The heaviest downfalls have been recorded in Ayr, a town in Burdekin North Queensland. With over 400mm dumped on the town in less than a day, streets flooded cutting all traffic to multiple roads and major highways. The Queensland Department of Transport is reporting which roads are affected by the flash flooding across the region.

Ingham, in north Queensland , experienced severe flooding with about 90% of properties affected in some way by the rising waters. The Queensland premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, visited the area on Sunday and said recent flood mitigation work had prevented more serious flooding .

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned the severe storms may lead to "dangerous and life-threatening" floods in Ayr, Alva Beach and Clare.


Some schools in the region have been closed and state emergency services have responded to a number of calls overnight, rescuing residents from flood waters outside of Townsville.

The downpour has also dislodged rocks in the city, resulting in a rock slide on Sturt Street. No injuries have been reported.

Townsville was devastated by floods in February last year, but the Bureau of Meteorology maintain that this downfall will not be as severe as 2019 flood. Flood watches and warnings are in place for multiple river systems across the state.

With more torrential rain expected, flash flooding warnings have been issued for Burketown, Normanton, Croydon, Kowanyama, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Julia Creek, Georgetown, and Richmond.

The wild weather is being caused by a low-pressure system moving across the Northern Australia region.

Conditions will ease towards the end of the week.
