Senior government sources say a surplus in the next two financial years appears “unlikely”, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

Returning the budget to surplus was one of the Coalition’s key election promises, but the government has changed its tune in recent months, with Scott Morrison now declaring a surplus is of “no focus” to him.

Mr Clennell said he understands the government believes it would have been able to survive the economic hit of the fires, but coupled with the coronavirus, it’s unlikely the budget will be able to recover.

The global tally of confirmed coronavirus cases hit 60 million on Wednesday, with the pace of new infections accelerating and the United States reporting record numbers of hospitalizations, according to a Reuters tally.
