New CCTV images have been released in a bid to solve a vandalism attack on Melbourne's famous street art laneway.

Graffiti vandals caused extensive damage when they spray-painted over artwork and cobblestones in Hosier Lane about 7.25pm on February 8.

According to police, the large group of unknown offenders headed towards Melbourne Park following the incident, where they then dumped the paint into gardens near Batman Avenue.

"Investigators have gathered a large amount of CCTV images from the surrounding area and are now releasing new images of a group of people who they believe can assist with their enquiries," Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said.

Earlier CCTV footage showed the masked men walking up and down the laneway, blasting the walls with paint from fire extinguishers and spray bottles.

The vandalism sparked outrage in the city, with City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp slamming the act as "disgraceful".

"We don't condone this sort of behaviour and we want to highlight the damage it has caused," she told 9News previously.
