The Department of Youth Justice, which manages the Cleveland Youth Detention Centre in Townsville, confirmed an incident was under way on Wednesday morning.

Multiple local media outlets were reporting a riot had broken out, with a fire inside one wing of the centre.

"Staff and police are responding to an evolving situation," a Youth Justice spokesperson said.

"As per standard procedures, the centre is in lockdown and the young people involved will be dealt with appropriately."

Dengue fever cases in Townsville could potentially be ruled an outbreak as local cases confirmed .
As north Queensland health authorities grapple with rising COVID-19 figures there's been a resurgence in local dengue and Ross River fever cases.Confirmed cases include a Stuart woman and a Condon man, while a case is being investigated in the suburb of Northern Beaches where health officials suspect the potential outbreak has started.
