A staff member was taken to hospital by ambulance with a head wound and the Special Operations Group riot squad was deployed, the Department of Corrective Services said in a statement on Sunday.

Other prisoners at the 1032-capacity facility, 40km south of Perth, were confined to their cells.

Corrective Services Commissioner Tony Hassall said the coronavirus epidemic had already stretched the state's prison resources.

"Prison staff have enough to deal with at the moment without the added impact of this unnecessary behaviour," he said.
