Mr Morrison said the latest package, which comes on the back of two previous packages worth almost $70 billion, has been designed to avoid mass lay-offs.

What is the payment and how does it work?

The payment is being called the Job Keeper Payment, and will be paid fortnightly at a rate of $1500.

The payment is designed to keep businesses from sacking workers and to avoid hundreds of thousands of Australians from joining the welfare system.

Who is eligible for the payment?

We still don't know the strict eligibility requirements.

But in broad terms, the payment will be made available to employees whose employers have had their business turnover fall by 30 per cent or more as a result of the virus.

Workers who were employed on March 1 but have since been stood down will also be eligible.

What if you work part-time?

If your employer is eligible, the payment is for employees who work full-time, part-time and casuals who have been employed for 12 months or more.

When do you receive the money?

The PM said that businesses can begin paying workers from today. The first payments to employers will be made in the first week of May, and will be backdated to today.

What if my employer keeps the money?

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said employers will have a legal obligation to pass on the Job Keeper payment.

How much does that work out to be a year?

A payment of $1500 a fortnight for 12 months works out to be equivalent to $39,000, although the package is only funded for the next six months.

Mr Morrison said the payment represents approximately 70 per cent of Australia's median wage and close to 100 per cent of the median wage for a lot of employees who have been stood down.

Official government information

Employees will be able to receive this payment in a number of different ways.

• If you ordinarily receive $1,500 or more in income per fortnight before tax, you will continue to receive your regular income according to the prevailing workplace arrangements. The JobKeeper Payments will subsidise part or all of your income.

• If you ordinarily receive less than $1,500 in income per fortnight before tax, your employer must pay you, at a minimum, $1,500 per fortnight, before tax.
