The four victims were all men, aged 91, 80, 76 and 61.

NSW Health executive director of health protection Jeremy McAnulty said three of the cases were acquired outside of New South Wales but did not give further details.

Two of the men were being treated at Westmead Hospital, one on the North Coast and the other at Hornsby Hospital.

Dr McAnulty said his condolences went out to the men's families.

"It just reinforces that message that the elderly and people with underlying diseases are most prone to severe complications, intensive care and death," he said.

He said it was a reminder that everyone is vulnerable to the virus.

"Even younger people who may get more mild disease, have an important role in transmitting the infection to their loved ones, particularly the elderly, so heeding those measures about no gatherings, about not [gathering] in groups and staying away from those most vulnerable, is really important," he said.

The deaths came as NSW recorded another 87 new cases of coronavirus in the 24 hours to 8:00pm on Saturday, taking the statewide total to 2,580.
