A man has died in hospital after he was attacked by a shark while swimming with friends in central Queensland.

The 23-year-old was swimming back to a charter vessel that was moored off the coast of North West Island when he was bitten by the shark on Monday afternoon.

He was treated at the scene by a doctor and paramedics before being flown by helicopter to Gladstone Hospital.

The man suffered serious injuries to his leg, hand and elbow. He died just after 10:00pm.

Capricorn Rescue Service media and communications officer Gabrielle Holmes said the helicopter was sent to the scene shortly after 6:00pm.

A man has survived a shark attack while swimming in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, escaping with only minor injuries. "A male in his 30s has reportedly sustained minor injuries after being bitten by a shark in waters off of North West Island , Central Queensland .

"The patient suffered significant injuries to their leg and arm and chest and were transported to Gladstone in a critical condition," she said.

"Our onboard critical care paramedic and doctor both performed significant medical treatment on the patient.

"It did take some time to get him stable enough for the flight but they were able to do so and get him to hospital."

Ms Holmes said the man was swimming with friends on a boat near the northern end of the island.

"At this stage we believe there was a group of them [swimming] and this patient was the last one to exit the water onto the boat, when the incident occurred."

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

North West Island is the largest coral cay in a string of islands and part of the Capricorn Cays National Park.

Friends and family continue to pay tribute to 13-year-old Summer Scantlebury who died after a quad bike accident late Monday afternoon.
