The man wanted by police over the death of a woman in South Melbourne has been arrested in western Sydney after a week-long manhunt.

Ricardo Barbaro, 33, had been wanted by police since the body of Ellie Price was found in a South Melbourne apartment last Monday afternoon.

Mr Barbaro was arrested by NSW Police in the Western Sydney suburb of Wentworth Point shortly after midnight.

"The arrest follows an extensive investigation and operation by Victoria Police Homicide Squad and Fugitive Taskforce detectives with support from a number of other law-enforcement agencies," Victoria Police said in a statement.

The Kativik Regional Police Force say a suspect has been arrested in relation to an alleged homicide in Inukjuak, in the northern Quebec region of Nunavik. According to a news release sent Sunday afternoon, an Inukjuak resident reported the disappearance of a 29-year-old man on Thursday.

Victorian investigators will travel to NSW to request Mr Barabaro be extradited to Melbourne.

Mr Barbaro is believed to be the son of Guiseppe Barbaro and the grandson of Pasquale Barbaro, who was murdered in 1990.

Detectives last week launched an appeal for the public's help in finding the fugitive and urged him to hand himself in.

Detective Inspector Tim Day said at the time, Ms Price died in violent circumstances and had likely been assaulted on Tuesday or Wednesday the week before.
