(Supplied: Benson Hewat) Victorian year 12 student Benson Hewat is used to studying online, but a coronavirus border lockdown in South-East Asia has made it more difficult than usual.

The former Ballarat Grammar student is one of 49 students based overseas who are studying VCE by correspondence through Virtual School Victoria.

He usually lives in Yogyakarta in Indonesia with his father but, while on the way home from India in late March, the pair were diverted to Cambodia because Indonesia had closed its borders due to COVID-19.

Benson said the border lockdown had caught him off guard as it meant he was stranded in Cambodia, trying to complete his final year of schooling.

"I was assuming we would be on a two-week trip to India, so I had brought very little [with me]," he said.

"I've been trying to work around the limitations that have been created for me.

"I've been doing English and I've found that pretty easy because I brought my English book.

"But now I'm having to do another English book and, because I don't have a physical copy, I've asked some of my teachers if they can send me some of the chapters in PDF form."

But Benson said maths had been more difficult.

"I had a dislike for maths already, and not having this book has put me in the position of 'Do I even bother at this point?'."

Benson said one advantage to his situation was having the world heritage-listed Angkor Wat temple to himself when the landmark was usually teeming with thousands of visitors every day.

"The temples are bare," he said.

"When we bought the temple passes they were telling us that they were selling about 30 passes a day — they were selling thousands [per day] before this whole coronavirus pandemic.

"The economy has taken a really hard hit."

Benson said a lot of businesses, such as tuk-tuk drivers, were really suffering.

"Everyone is trying to take on second jobs as builders or guards," he said.

No home on the horizon

He said he hoped to be able to travel home to Indonesia in early June but was unsure whether the border restrictions will be lifted.

Benson knows he won't be able to visit his mother and siblings in Ballarat for a while, but modern technology has kept the family connected during the lockdown.

"My brother and I are very close, so we've been talking online using Discord [an app allowing gamers to communicate] and when I'm having free time I join him and some other mates playing online games," he said.

Despite the difficulties studying at the moment, Benson is eyeing off more adventures when he finishes year 12.

"I'm hoping to do a volunteer position with one of my father's friends in Raja Ampat [in West Papua] and then after that try to apply for [Gadjah Mada University] and hoping to work in anthropology or international development work in West Papua," he said.
