The 53-year-old leg-amputated Italian was on a handbike near the city of Pienza in Tuscany when the accident happened, a police spokesman said. Zanardi was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter. At first, there were no details of the severity of his injuries.
Zanardi had participated in a race for Paralympic athletes with hand bikes or bicycles in Italy. In 2001 he lost both legs in an accident at the Lausitzring. Nevertheless, the Italian returned to motorsport and also won four paracycling golds at the Paralympics.
