A new online pre-approval process for travellers heading into South Australia won't be affected by the Premier scrapping plans to open the border with Victoria on July 20.

From tomorrow, visitors will need to apply for an exemption on the sa.gov.au website, whether they are travelling into SA by road or air.

The applicant will then be advised if they are considered an essential traveller and can enter the state without quarantining, or if they have to quarantine for 14 days upon their arrival.

"We know this is going to be very difficult for those who were planning around the 20th, which is why we have made a decision to provide this advice as early as possible.

"Our number one priority is the health, safety and welfare of all South Australians, and at this point we cannot relax the border on the 20th of July."
