Prosecutors told the court Mr Huang's mobile phone and laptop had also been seized as police are investigating whether he's committed other similar offences.

With no criminal history, the man's lawyers argued there was nothing to suggest he wouldn't comply with bail conditions.

Prosecutors opposed Mr Huang's release with concerns he might interfere with evidence or attempt to leave the country.

Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker didn't think it was likely he'd interfere with evidence as his devices had already been seized, and he'd been evicted from the ANU campus.

"His visa status is a matter for the immigration authorities," Chief Magistrate Walker said.

Mr Huang was granted bail on condition he surrender his passport, and live where directed by ACT Corrective Services. He'll return to court later this month to enter pleas.
