A woman has died in a diving accident off the coast of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.

The 53-year-old woman was reportedly pulled from the water unconscious before bystanders tried to save her life with CPR.

She had been diving off Gordons Bay near Clovelly about 9.30am this morning.

Paramedics treated the woman before rushing her to Prince of Wales Hospital in a critical condition.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"The woman was pulled unconscious from the water by members of the dive course – who were able to commence CPR prior to our arrival," NSW Ambulance Inspector Karl Cronan said in a statement to 9News.

"Our paramedics took over and did everything they could, working tirelessly to provide life-saving treatment and resuscitation before transporting her to hospital in critical condition."

Gordons Bay is a popular swimming, fishing and diving spot between Coogee and Clovelly beaches.
