Former government employee charged

A former NSW government employee has been charged over allegedly using fake university documents to defraud an organisation.

Police set up Strike Force Lallat to investigate reports that Jamie David Morgan claimed to have completed a university course while he was working for the NSW Government.

It's alleged he submitted fake university invoices and documents seeking payment of more than $20,000 from his employer.

He was charged with two counts of dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception and will appear at Queanbeyan Local Court today.

Counting continues in Eden-Monaro

Postal votes from the marginal electorate of Eden-Monaro are still being counted today with the Liberal candidate Fiona Kotvojs still holding out for a victory.

Yesterday afternoon, Labor's Kristy McBain officially claimed victory in the tight by-election and said she was too far ahead for the Liberal candidate to win.

As of this morning, fewer than 1,000 votes separated the two candidates on a two-party preferred basis.

The ABC's chief election analyst Antony Green called the election for Ms McBain on Saturday night and yesterday said a Labor win was still the most likely outcome.

Car near Merrylands rail tracks delays trains

Trains were delayed at Merrylands Railway Station overnight after a car fell down an embankment and landed close to rail lines.

The driver and passenger were not injured but were treated by ambulance paramedics at the scene.

Trains were stopped as a precaution for about 30 minutes before the Toyota Echo was removed.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or may have dashcam footage is asked to contact Cumberland Police.

More support needed for Centrelink staff: report

A new report is calling on the Federal Government to provide increased support to frontline Centrelink workers so they can help people experiencing distress following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report, by Suicide Prevention Australia and Wesley Mission, shows many people have become vulnerable to suicide due to joblessness, homelessness or increased drug and alcohol use.

The report is also urging the Government to extend the JobKeeper payment scheme past September to help those vulnerable to distress and suicide.

Suicide Prevention Australia CEO Nieves Murray said the Government must make the announcement as early as this month.

Two women dead after Camperdown crash

Two women, aged 62 and 85, have died after being hit by a car at Camperdown.

A 69-year-old man was arrested after the accident in Grose Street on Saturday afternoon.

The women were taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and the 62-year-old died a short time later.

The 85-year-old woman died on Sunday afternoon — the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit has begun an investigation.

Labor candidate Kristy McBain secured the win on Sunday with an unassailable lead beating out Liberal candidate Fiona Kotvojs 50.58 per cent to 49.42 in terms of two-party-preferred.Mr Murray said while Labor took the seat both its vote and the Greens vote were down three per cent, which is surprising given the media constantly claim a majority of Australians are “all in on climate change”.
