Far North Queensland Police have issued a warning to drivers to slow down after four people were killed in separate crashes on the region's roads over the weekend.

Among them was a 16-year-old boy, who officers said was in a car carrying several other teenagers — and driven by an 18-year-old — that rolled at Lockhart River in Cape York about 8:40pm on Sunday.

He was taken to the local health centre but died a few hours later.

The driver and three other passengers escaped injury.

Senior Sergeant Cary Coolican from Cairns Police described the weekend as "tragic".
