The high rate of pedestrian deaths comes as deaths from other types of traffic fatalities are dropping. As a result, pedestrian deaths make up a growing proportion of overall motor vehicle fatalities . The GHSA report is based on preliminary data from state highway authorities.

Ipswich Road is one Brisbane's main roads connecting Brisbane to the nearby city of Ipswich , via the Ipswich Motorway. Ipswich Road used to be part of the Cunningham Highway. Logan Road , Pacific Motorway, and Beaudesert Road (Mount Lindesay Highway)

"My dream is to see a tunnel under the road from near the [Princess Alexandra] Hospital coming out the other side near [Yeronga Memorial Park]," Georgie told ABC Radio Brisbane.

Brisbane City Council Independent Councillor for Tennyson Nicole Johnston and Labor Councillor for Moorooka Steve Griffiths have joined forces to petition the council to consider a bypass tunnel, among other proposals.

"We have about 60,000 vehicles a day using Ipswich Road and it is dangerous," Councillor Johnston said.

"Ninety-five crashes in five years, three deaths, multiple pedestrian injuries — we need to do something.

"We have a primary school on one side of the road; we've got children crossing everyday.

"We want to see change that will bring safety back into our community and to reclaim this hub … for the for residents, rather than through traffic."

Despite all its flaws, the fact does remain it's an awesome city, and is far from being lame. Beautiful Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. Please please please don't swim in the river.

Pedestrians and cyclists are vulnerable road users and suffer the most severe consequences in collisions with other road users, since they are unprotected against the speed and mass of the Figure 2: Fatality risk as a function of impact speed for pedestrians struck by the front of a passenger car.

The councillors, who are calling for a feasibility study into the a bypass tunnel, pointed to the success of the Nundah Bypass Tunnel.

"Yes, it will be expensive. Yes, it's complex. Yes, we're just at the point of calling for a feasibility study, but people are dying — it is unsafe," Councillor Johnston said.

But according to Infrastructure Committee Chair and Councillor for the Hamilton Ward, David McLachlan, neither a bypass nor a study were on the cards.

"It's not currently something that council is considering," Councillor McLachlan said.

The council also confirmed it did not intend to undertake a feasibility study, citing the 2018 Pedestrian Safety Review for the corridor that did not recommend a tunnel under the road.

Local business owner Frances Brandon, who runs a shoe repair shop with her husband, Trevor, on Ipswich Road, said calls for a bypass spanned more than a decade.

Reducing speed limit

Councillor Johnston and Councillor Griffiths' proposal included lowering the speed limit along Ipswich Rd to 50kph, down from 60kph.

"It has been done at Moorooka, it has been done in other parts of the city," Councillor Griffiths said.

"We don't want it to be an unreasonable request, 40kph might be too slow for a major road but 50kph would certainly be appropriate and a step in the right direction to make it safer for residents but safer for traffic as well."

Council said it appealed a 2019 review that recommended the existing speed limit of 60kph be retained for the full corridor.

The State Government then undertook a Speed Limit Review Panel in June 2020 that recommended council consider a permanent or time-based speed limit reduction on some sections of Ipswich Road.

A council spokesperson said a 24-hour pedestrian survey on Ipswich Road was completed by council this week and final analysis of the results were due in about four weeks' time.
