NSW Police have identified a woman found dead in remote bushland in Sydney's south as Najma Carroll and are trying to track down her associates. The 33-year-old's body was found badly burnt off a walking track about a kilometre from Heathcote Road at Menai yesterday afternoon.

NSW Police have identified a woman found dead in remote bushland in Sydney's south as Najma Carroll and are trying to track down her associates.

The 33-year-old's body was found badly burnt off a walking track about a kilometre from Heathcote Road at Menai yesterday afternoon.

A man was walking along a trail at Sandy Point Quarry when his dog led him into the bush and made the grim discovery.

Najma Carroll used to live in Marrickville, but frequented Sydney's south-west and had a history of drug offences.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Patton appealed to anyone with information that could help catch her killer or killers to contact police.

"She was in contact with her family from time to time but what we would be asking is if anyone was an associate or knows Ms Carroll to contact us here at Sutherland Police Station," he said.

"Her family were upset … Ms Carroll was known to us for prohibited substances and we are trying to track down those who knew her."

Offenders 'didn't want the body found'

Police would not elaborate on the extent of Ms Carroll's injuries, nor would they say whether a weapon was used, although the ABC understands she suffered severe head injuries.

"It's an isolated area so the fact that the body was found in an isolated area would indicate that the offender or offenders didn't want the body found," Detective Chief Inspector Patton said.

"As for the offenders, we will eventually catch up with them."

Investigations are continuing, with police rescue expected to retrieve the body from the quarry by the end of tonight.
