'Very light snowfall' forecast

Mr Boeck pointed to "significant cold outbreaks" moving through Tasmania and Victoria in recent days as the source of South Australia's cold snap, which he described as "one of those things that probably happens only once every few years".

"There have been photos and videos circulated of snowfall to relatively low levels over Tasmania in the last 24 to 48 hours," he said.

"We didn't get that snowfall in South Australia, but we're on the tail end of that cold air and we have had clear skies and light winds move overnight associated with a weak high pressure ridge.

"Those sorts of conditions are conducive to cold overnight temperatures."

A severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds is current in part of the state's far north, with rain expected over the next few days.

The BOM said South Australians can expect colder daytime temperatures later this week, with possible "very light snowfall" in the Flinders Ranges and Mid North.

But the BOM expects overnight temperatures will not be as cold as they have been, with more cloud moving over the state.
