Mr Halcro moved to Sydney from Chelsea in Melbourne's south-east earlier this year to help his father renovate his home.

His younger brother, 33, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he "stopped in his tracks" when he got a call from his father while out on a morning run last Saturday.

"I could tell Dad was rattled by the sound of his voice, then he said 'Brett has been attacked, he's been stabbed, he was stabbed in the eye'," he said.

"My first reaction was just frustration and really upset, then feeling deeply sorry for him, and it has just been a whirlwind."

The attack was one of at least a dozen recent hated-fueled incidents around New York that are under investigation. Josef Neumann was one of five Jewish men stabbed in an attack at a Hanukkah celebration in Monsey, New York, last weekend.

The pair had been texting each other only a few hours before the alleged attack took place.

"He called me at some point and left a voice mail, saying 'hey mate, nothing is wrong — just calling to catch up — alright speak to you later, see ya'," he said.

"It all seemed like nothing out of the ordinary and then I got a phone call from dad the next day about what had happened — it was horrifying."

The younger brother has been unable to travel to Sydney to see his brother because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The updates were primarily coming from the hospital, but as nine teenagers were arrested, more details have emerged from the Children's Court in Surry Hills.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kai Jiang told the court on Tuesday the "planned and targeted attack" left an innocent man disfigured and was a clear example of "mob mentality".

"As more and more details emerge about the attack, it just gets worse and worse for me and my family," Mr Halcro's younger brother said.

When people want to believe that the world is just, and that bad things won’t happen to them, empathy can suffer.

"I feel unbelievable heartache for what Brett must have experienced in the moment — it hasn't necessarily been anger towards the perpetrators, more about the details that have been so sad and distressing.

"I keep visualising the moment — thinking my poor brother being jumped by multiple people at once — going through what he went through, it's just… unthinkable."

The younger brother said he remembered playing football with Mr Halcro in the backyard as kids growing up on the Gold Coast.

"Although we are quite different, at the same time, I have always looked up to him as a brother, he has always been very protective of me," he said.

He said his brother's four-year-old daughter is the light of his life.

"His daughter calls him her superhero — Brett is a great dad, he loves her so much and the bond they share is really special," he said.

A GoFundMe page has raised more than $36,000 in less than a week — something the Halcro family have been overwhelmed by, with the money going towards Brett Halcro's rehabilitation.

"It has been overwhelming and nice to see so many strangers reach out in a very distressing situation," the younger brother said.

"I just want to thank everyone for the support, it means so much to Dad and myself.

"It makes us quite emotional. Dad just can't get his head around the fact that complete strangers are being so generous and empathetic."
