Firefighters are still battling to extinguish a factory fire in Campbellfield after local residents heard explosions coming from the building. An advice message has been issued for Melbourne's northern suburbs and those with heart or lung conditions are being warned to stay inside.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire Rescue Victoria Incident Controller Gary Mann said he expected firefighters to be on the scene for another 24 hours.

"The efforts were very much on preventing the fire spreading to adjacent buildings, which was achieved," he said.

"We are utilising a fire extinguishing strategy using foam. That is working well, it's having an effect on containing the fire and reducing the amount of smoke that's entering into community areas.

"The materials within the battery recycling factory are such that they react with water, so the challenge of suppressing the fire and those reactions are inevitable and they were causing explosions that could have been heard in the area."

Residents who are sensitive to smoke were advised to close windows and doors and turn off heating or cooling systems.

As of 9:20am, roughly five hours after firefighters responded to the scene, the fire was declared as being "under control" by authorities.
