The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 18 This week marks the end of what’s been both the shortest and longest home-and-away season in some time. It’s been protracted and extended, barren and cramped, enthralling and exhausting – and it’s all set to finish up now. There’s a bit to play for in terms of finals jostling, with St Kilda and (more so) the Western Bulldogs vulnerable to both Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney so, thankfully, we’ve got a good reason to tune in.

The clash was marred by a 15th-minute incident involving Bulldogs prop Luke Thompson, who was put on report for an alleged eye gouge on Penrith opposite James Tamou.

After a sleepy opening 30 minutes where they were lucky to be up 4-0 through Brian To'o, the Panthers turned on the attack to savage the opposition with a three-try burst in eight minutes before half-time.

A neat kick by Jarome Luai got the ball rolling for the Panthers as second rower Kurt Capewell muscled over to help make it 10-0 in the 31st minute.

[Panthers vs Bulldogs: Summary]

Sharks set to become worst finals team in NRL history

Sharks set to become worst finals team in NRL history No team in the NRL era has ever qualified for the finals without beating one of the teams in the top eight throughout the season. A loss to the Raiders on Saturday, without the injured Shaun Johnson, will see the Sharks create history for all the wrong reasons. The Sharks' record against the top-eight teams is far from impressive, notching an aggregate losing margin of 212-106 in the seven games played against the finals-bound sides. That's an alarming average of 30.2 points per game conceded.

The rot continued after the break as Naden scored his second and the Panthers also laid on tries to Tamou, Josh Mansour and Matt Burton.

They also kept their try line — and record as the competition's best defensive team — intact.

[Panthers vs Bulldogs: Stats]

It was a disappointing finale in a forgettable season for the Bulldogs, who the previous week had shown plenty of spirit in an upset win over finals-bound South Sydney.

That victory effectively helped them to avoid the wooden spoon, with the Bulldogs finishing on just three wins with Brisbane but maintaining a superior for and against.

The Panthers will play the fourth-placed team in week one of the finals, with either the Sydney Roosters or Parramatta to be their opponent.

[Panthers vs Bulldogs: Chalkboard]

The Roosters blew the chance to wrap up third position when they were hammered 60-8 by South Sydney on Friday night.

The Eels will finish third if they beat the Wests Tigers later tonight.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Finals Week 1 .
I didn’t think we’d make it all those months ago, but look at us – we’ve made it to the finals. Everyone’s fresh from their week off and we’ve got four genuine crackers to get this year’s finals series underway. It doesn’t get much better. It also doesn’t get much better than my ripping score of nine in the home-and-away season’s final round. By my calculation it’s the only perfect round anyone’s managed this season. That takes me up to 100 points and sees me claim the expert tipping title for 2020. You beauty.
